If you love the old one, you'll either hate this version or like me, think it's merely ok.

Anne with an E

Where do I start?? Quite frankly I was horrified when I heard that an Anne of Green Gables remake was in the works, because lets face it, you cant really improve on perfection. The 1985 Sullivan Entertainment version starring Megan Follows was damn near perfect. The whole cast....awesome! The scenery....breathtaking! I had already written off the remake months before it hit Netflix.

I like to think I'm a fairly open-minded person and so I gave Anne with an E a go. Full disclosure, its a very different take on LM Montgomerys classic tale and I'm still making up my mind about it. Yes, there's lots of parallels with the 1985 version particularly in the first 2 episodes (there are 7 eps in season 1) but overall the series is WAY darker than the original. Rape, mental abuse and financial hardship are all covered and the show spends a lot of time on some strange story arcs, for example when Anne gets her period; I guess this was a big deal in the early 1900s.

The acting and characters are hit and miss:

  • Anne – too hyper and excitable for my liking (but clearly the actor is very talented)
  • Marilla – is portrayed very differently (although I do love the flashbacks of her teenage romance to John Blythe
  • Matthew – plays the role tenderly (and has his own little tale of lost love) Gilbert – I quite like
  • Diana – not a fan
  • Rachel Lynde – not a fan
  • Josephine Barry – meh (and I think they are suggesting she was gay!!??)
  • If you love the old one, you'll either hate this version or like me, think it's merely ok. If you've seen all 7 eps (or given it a go). I would love to hear what you think in the comments below. Most people I know aren't even giving it a guernsey out of respect for the original. #anneforever
